The rivalry between University of Georgia’s and Georgia Tech’s athletic teams has gone on for centuries, establishing their rivalry prior to 1891 before Georgia Tech even had a football team. The feud commonly referred to as “Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate” has grown from silly competition to a nationally renowned competition between the two American Football teams. In modern days, the many traditions occurring during the rival gameday is what makes it such a special time. Starting in 1995, the winner of this game is awarded a trophy known as the “Governor’s Cup”, a shiny piece of medal that comes along with bragging rights and triumph over the opposing team. Along with that, University of Georgia changed the lyrics of their unofficial fight song, “Glory, Glory”, from spelling out the school’s letters to “To hell with Georgia Tech”.
Looking back at the history of this game, the first match was played in 1893, which resulted in a Georgia Tech win. The UGA Bulldogs were not happy with this win, coming back with a 5-year win streak right after. Since the beginning of this rivalry, University of Georgia has now claimed seventy-two victories, losing only thirty-nine games and tying five games. While Georgia currently has a large lead on Governor Cups, this game is just as exciting as the beginning. Citizens of Athens and Atlanta both go to manic for this game. This year, Georgia is looking to extend their 7-year streak of beating Georgia Tech’s yellowjackets. After an exciting game in 2024, with a close win score of 44-42, Kirby Smart, head coach of UGA, looks to widen that margin and defeat Georgia Tech on November 28th, 2025, in Atlanta Georgia.
