The arrests of two prominent NBA figures on October 23, 2025, gave the NBA its own horror story during the Halloween season. The FBI launched an investigation into alleged gambling and high-tech scam poker schemes.
Hall of Famer and Portland head coach Chauncey Billups was arrested along with Miami Heat star Terry Rozier and 30 others in a takedown of two gambling operations. These supposedly leaked inside information about athletes and rigged poker games backed up by Mafia families.
Billups was charged with participating in a conspiracy to fix high-stake card games that cheated gamblers out of at least $7 million dollars. Rozier was accused of exploiting private information about players to win bets. The two were apart of separate schemes of this broader scandal.
The NBA season opened this past week, and the scandal caused complete chaos, but NBA commissioner and others are, though upset, are doing their best to handle the situation. Silver stated, “I was deeply disturbed” and “There’s nothing more important to the league and its fans than the integrity of the competition” on Amazon Prime Video, October 25, 2023.
The investigation carries on, an ending not quite in sight, but answers are continuing to be answered as the league hopes to maintain the excellence they strive to give their players and fans.
