On November 4, 2025, New York City residents, along with rest of the world will find out the results of the NYC Mayoral election. Running in the election are Democratic Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, Republican activist Curtis Sliwa, and Independent former governor, Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo resigned as governor back in 2021 but is pursuing a political comeback to be NYC’s next mayor.
NYC’s last mayor was Democrat Eric Adams. However, his term was not without scandal. In September 2024, a series of investigations about Adams emerged. A poll done by Marist College in October 2024 found that 69% of voters thought he should resign for being indicted on federal charges of bribery, fraud, and soliciting illegal foreign campaign donations. He did not end up resigning and the case against Adams was dismissed with prejudice last April.
This all led up to the current mayoral election. Each candidate’s campaign focuses on different issues in New York. Cuomo’s campaign prioritizes increasing public safety in areas like subway stations, making the cost of living more affordable, revamping mental health and substance use disorder care systems and improving public education. Sliwa’s campaign prioritizes reducing crime/ increasing public safety, as he has had a long history with the Guardian Angels, an anti-crime patrol group. This group is known for their distinctive red berets that Sliwa often sports during his campaign. He also focuses on advocating for social services programs in New York City. Mamdani’s campaign prioritizes affordability; enforcing a rent freeze on rent-stabilized apartments and establishing 30$ minimum hourly wage. He also wants to make bus travel free and promote community safety.
So far polls show Mamdani in the lead with his strongest supporters being Democrats, Asian American voters and voters in the age range of 18-34 according to the Quinnipiac Polls. Cuomo’s strongest supporters are Jewish voters and Sliwa’s are Republicans. However, this is a pretty tight race and as November 4th draws near polls have time to completely change.
