(Some) happy holidays
A few holidays are just better than others.
I love the holidays as much (if not more) than the next person. If you see me at school, you know that I’ve been wearing Christmas socks since October. Every day, I cross off another day on my calendar as I anxiously await the next holiday. However, there are some that don’t get me as rallied up. I love the kindness in the air and cheer of the festive times of year, but I’m not afraid to admit that there are a few holidays that I could go without.
1. Christmas
I follow the trend of Christmas being my favorite holiday- I don’t understand how you couldn’t. Catchy Christmas music blares on every radio station, lights illuminate everyone’s houses, festive Starbucks drinks bring warmth. It’s the time when finals are over and your only homework is to relax. Before Christmas, everyone is drowned to their knees with stress over school, grades and activities, but Christmas break is the one time that we actually get to enjoy the cool weather outside and the warm fires inside while watching Elf with friends and family while drinking hot chocolate (Nestle of course). My favorite part of Christmas is my family traditions, specifically our secret Santa.
2. New Year’s Eve
Oh, how I love New Year’s. Happy vibes radiate as everyone makes their resolutions before the ball drops. This is one of my favorite days of the year because I love the change in the air. Everyone looks back on the highlights of their previous year (some proud, some not) and makes plans to make the next year better than the last. Personally, one of the best feelings in the world is counting down the ball drop from 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, to “HAPPY NEW YEAR!” (in the tone everyone says it in, like in “High School Musical.”) Not to mention, the weather is still cold out, which always automatically makes me ten times happier.
3. Thanksgiving
Who doesn’t love Thanksgiving? There’s nothing better than a holiday where you get to eat a delicious meal and get a week off of school. I think there are three things that make Thanksgiving so merry. First, the plenty of food you get to eat makes my mouth water now. My mom’s stuffing is truly phenomenal and one of the highlights of my year. Second, Thanksgiving comes at the perfect time. It’s the time when you’re sick of the daily routine and so overloaded with homework that you couldn’t be more ecstatic. And third, the whole family is home. That’s right, all six of my siblings come home for a week and between family Disneyland trips and sleeping in until noon, we manage to have the best Thanksgivings.
4. Saint Patrick’s Day
While my family is very Irish, I regret to say I don’t love this one. I think since we usually have school on this day, it gets lost and forgotten between tests and homework. Honestly, if it weren’t for my mom making green pancakes for breakfast, I wouldn’t even know it was Saint Patrick’s Day. There’s no Saint Patrick’s Day music or signature drinks at Starbucks, so is it even a holiday? To me, it feels like another regular day that people happen to wear green.
5. Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day also does not bode well. There is no part of me that looks forward to it or is excited for it when the “holiday” comes around. Maybe its because the month of February is always busy and it’s hot (not particularly my favorite weather). So, coming to school and walking around seeing chocolates and flowers doesn’t really get me jazzed. Truthfully, I think if it were forgotten, no one would particularly miss it.
6. Halloween
I do not like Halloween. Of all the holidays from Christmas to Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, Halloween is nowhere near the top of my list. I don’t get it and I don’t like it. I don’t really like the decorations for Halloween. It seems like they’re trying to copy Thanksgiving because the similar colors and pumpkins, that is not okay. I also don’t like candy corn and while that may not seem like a big deal, it is. Candy corn is in a bowl in every single house during October. Halloween is no way as exciting as Christmas or New Year’s Eve. On a happier note, I do love passing out candy to adorable kids dressed up in costumes. But there is just something about Halloween that I don’t love.
But, regardless if you agree with me or not, go out and celebrate your favorite holidays with pride. Happy holidays everybody!
