Starting in 1959, the Grammys Awards are the most prestigious annual music industry awards that are presented by the Recording Academy. Awards are presented in over 75 categories spanning over many genres such as pop and country. Winners are chosen by the Recording Academy’s voting members, who are artists and producers within the industry. This year, on Sunday, February 1st, the 68th Annual Grammy Awards Show took place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California.
This year, there was a total of 95 awards. These award categories were presented during the Premiere Ceremony. The show, hosted by Trevor Noah, opened with a exciting performance of “APT” by ROSE and Bruno Mars. Soon after this, a thrilling performance was given by Lady Gaga of her hit song “Abracadabra.”
Throughout the night, some of the current most popular artists had the chance to perform. One of these artists was Sabrina Carpenter, who performed her number 1 hit song “Manchild.” Despite having six nominations at this year’s Grammys, Carpenter did not end up winning any awards.
Another artist that got the chance to perform was Olivia Dean, who performed her song “Man I Need.” This upbeat, jazz-toned style song was performed flawlessly for this up and coming artist. Dean ended her night winning her first Grammy for Best New Artist, defeating artists such as Katseye, The Marias, and Addison Rae.
One of the most praised performances of the night was Tyler, The Creator’s performance of his popular songs “Thought I Was Dead,” “Like Him,” and “Sugar on My Tongue.” This performance featured a red Ferrari and a gas station that exploded. Tyler, The Creator was nominated for 6 awards and won Best Album Cover for his album CHROMAKOPIA.
The first major award of the broadcast was Record of the Year, given to “Luther” by Kendrick Lamar and SZA. This award was presented by Cher who has just accepted for Lifetime Achievement Award. This award made Lamar the first rapper to win Record of the Year twice.
Around the middle of the show, there was an Ozzy Osborne Tribute. This was performed by Post Malone, Slash, Chad Smith, and others. It included a rock-heavy tribute to the late Black Sabbath frontman.
Lots of other important awards were given throughout the night. One of these included Song of the Year, which was given to Billie Eilish and Finneas for their song “Wildflower.” Best Pop Solo Performance was given to “Messy” by Lola Young, which was seen as a surprise to the audience. Best Pop Vocal Album was given to “Mayhem” by Lady Gaga, and Album of the Year was given to Bad Bunny for “Debi Tirar Mas Fotos,” which was presented by Harry Styles.
