Dancing with Deadlines

For senior students, life becomes frantic managing everyday responsibilities on top of college applications. Multitasking classes, extracurriculars, the SAT/ACT and in some cases part-time jobs is a challenge in itself. If that isn’t enough, the college application process faces them as well.

“The stress with my already existing workload is overwhelming since I have a lot of exams to take for full IB” shares Monica Koh 24’. A lot of her peers share this sentiment as the bittersweet reality hits that high school is coming to a close

The frenzy of deadlines, personal statements, and supplementals leaves a lot of students feeling burnt out. For those struggling with time management, the school provides counseling specifically for this process.

“My counselor has helped by giving me guidance about Scoir and college applications.” Koh explained, “She has also given me good advice on letters of recommendation.”

Although it can be overwhelming, the benefit of this process is all the self-reflection involved. Many prompts ask students to evaluate their personal achievements and goals allowing them to look inward for self-reflection and growth.

“I would advise younger students to think ahead of time about what colleges they plan on applying to. Then they can prepare  for application season in advance.” Koh emphasized. “I feel very stressed applying to college and yet excited for a new chapter in my life” Koh said.

She explained that amidst the pressure there was a buzz still not knowing where everyone will end up in a year. “I want to study in college because it is an opportunity for me to find exactly what I want in a career.”

While balancing daily routines there remains a sense of anticipation for all the seniors working to secure their future. The seniors excitedly await the sense of relief and joy towards new beginnings.
