On Wednesday November 6th, 2024, it was announced that former president Donald J. Trump and J.D. Vance had received the most electoral votes, making them President Elect and Vice President Elect. Though it was a close race, Trump received 312 electoral votes while former vice president Kamala Harris received 226 electoral votes. Trump, the United States’ former president from 2016 to 2020, is the second president to serve two non-consecutive terms, behind former Democratic president Grover Cleveland who served from 1885-1895 and 1893-1897. In addition to receiving the most electoral votes, Trump also won the popular vote with 75,143,261 votes. As president elect, Trump is set to be sworn into office on January 20th, 2025. Furthermore, the Republican Party won control of the United States House of Representatives. In the Senate, the Republican Party currently has 53 seats while the Democratic Party has 47. Regarding the recent wars, Trump plans to put “America First” and limit involvement in foreign wars, such as those in Gaza and Ukraine. As he takes office, Trump plans to fix the economy by lowering inflation and prioritizing large corporations.
