This past weekend our very own SMCHS dance team traveled to Orlando, Florida for their annual contest of champs competition. The team took home second in x-small and large lyrical, third in medium lyrical, fourth in medium dance and finale performance, and a choreography award for medium lyrical. In addition to group awards, senior soloist Janna Redmond placed second in a pool of over one hundred dancers.

“It’s honestly amazing,” said Redmond, “it’s the best we’ve done in Florida in all of my time at SM.”

The SMCHS dance team travels to Florida every year. Besides the competition, the annual Florida trip serves as a team bonding experience for the girls,

“we finished dance on Sunday and after that, we get to go to Disney World and a bunch of other fun stuff,” said Redmond.

With all the dancing and bonding, the team is busy in Florida. But, they do leave some time for fun traditions. The dance team’s traditions include dress-up battle, Disney night, and visors. This year’s dress-up battle winners were Gabi Figueroa, Kayla Preis, and Tara Meany with their Avatar theme. Despite the loss, it was still Redmond’s favorite.

“It’s basically a night where each room has a theme and whoever’s room dresses up the best wins,” said Redmond.

The Contest of Champs competition is ultimately a preparation for the team’s national competition, taking place in Anaheim, California this year. Go out and see the girls take on the dance floor on March 25th and 26th for their national competition. Go Eagles!
