“Avatar” Returns After 13 Years

Although the original “Avatar” movie hit theaters back in 2009, the anticipation and popularity of the sequel exceeds expectations.

Released on December 16, 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water”, dives back into the famous world. Directed by James Cameron, the movie came out 13 years after the announcement, but took five years to make. Many would think that because of the 13 year gap between these two movies, people would not be as excited to see it. However, upon the week of release, money began to pour out for the movie and suddenly, everyone was watching it.

The original film has a box office of $2.923 billion USD, along with a budget of 237 million USD.  “Avatar: The Way of Water” comes in close with a $2.027 billion box office, and surpasses the original “Avatar”‘s budget with 250 million USD. It is common for the movies to be compared, such as the scores on Rotten Tomatoes. “Avatar” shares a critic and audience score of 82%, while “Avatar: The Way of Water”, falls behind with a critic score of 77% but surges ahead with an audience score of 92%.

The film stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and more. Saldana is now the first actor to be in four movies that earned more than $2 billion. Along with both “Avatar” movies, the “Avengers: Endgame” and “Avengers: Infinity War” give Saldana this title. Similarly, Cameron is the first director to have three films that made over $2 billion. The additional movie is “Titanic”. Cameron is to give the world two more “Avatar” movies.

The film revolves around former characters Jake Sully and Ney’tiri, who now have a family. Due to conflicts, they leave to Pandora’s eastern seaboard. It is a sci-fi/action film, along with a longer length of two hours and 42 minutes.
