All aboard
Seniors board the Newport Horn-blower for a night of music, dancing and senior festivities.
The Senior Cruise is an SMCHS senior tradition. The class of 2018 set out on the Newport Harbor in an array of costumes for their first senior event on Thursday Aug. 24.
From the Mexican food to the DJs and the karaoke machine, seniors danced and enjoyed the ocean view.
The number of attendees rose from an expected 250-300 students to 350 this year.
“One of the coolest things about it, is there is something for everyone on the boat,” said AssociateĀ Director of Activities, Chris Barry. “Whether you are super excited and hyped up or just looking for something a little more laid back, you can find it.”
The senior cruise, usually planned for the October or early November, is costume themed, so anything appropriate and creative was encouraged. Students came in groupsĀ as movie characters, celebrities, cops, athletes and more. A couple standouts included the Miss America pageant participants, The Blue Man Group, and the members of the band, Lonely Island.
“When you get the entire class on a boat together for a few hours, with beautiful weather and great costumes, there is no way you can have a bad time,” Barry said. “Even my sister from the class of 1997 went on Senior Cruise and loved it.”
Senior ASB President, Garrett Domier, showed off his hippie spirit with friends.(click through the slideshow to see!)
“My current goal for the senior class is to make our senior year the most spirited and involved year yet,” Domier
said. “The original goal was to get our class to be united and energized for the school year. I honestly think that we pulled that off. Our class has never been as close as it is now.”
As the ship docks at the end of the night, the first senior activity is checked off the list, but the upcoming plethora of events leaves the class of 2018 in anticipation.
