Senior swagger

Senior year a grand finale with a glamorous exit.

Three stories up on R3 when the sun goes down, seniors are the reason why songs are blasting and professional male models are coming to SMCHS. The class of 2015 has been amping its fierce factor by practicing their runway walking skills for the Mothers Club Fashion Show on May 3.

This event is planned by the Mothers Club and aims to give SMCHS’ beloved seniors a glamorous closure at SMCHS.

“There are three rounds,” said Lori Stanton, co-chair of the senior fashion show. “The first round is casual, the second is formal and the third is called ‘The Parade of Colleges’. In this last round, students wear the sweatshirt of the college they will attend with jeans and strut their stuff to show their pride for the college they will attend.”

The final runway is astounding but and the pre-production requires a lot of work and investment out of school. Professional models even come to SMCHS to instruct seniors how to strut properly. The James Campbell Production Company is responsible for the choreography on the runway and has helped SMCHS with this event since 2013.

“They take it really seriously which surprised me at first because I thought it was low-key having fun with your friends, but they want us to be legit models,” said senior Noelle Kendall. “I think it’s cool because it will make the show look really authentic, professional and better than expected.”

Seniors have attended several rehearsals in order to achieve the perfect senior swagger. They have been split into two groups: short and tall  to organize the walk. They have undergone fittings and girls have had to practice in their heels. But the dynamic that the girls and the boys bring to these practices are completely different.

“The guys have a different walk,” Kendall said. “They make fun and over-exaggerate all of the moves so when they walk it’s really funny. The girls have fun but they are more serious about it just trying not to fall over wearing high heels.”

When SMCHS moms want to have a good senior send-off, they plan everything from the best instructors to the hippest brands. Brands like Macy’s, Friar Tux, Daisy Shoppe and Group USA paired up with make-up artists will glami-fy the models on the day of the runway.

“Seniors Paige Schuler and Maddie Bone who take up makeup artistry as a hobby will do makeup alongside Legends Hair out of Ladera Ranch who will provide hair dressers and more makeup artists,” Stanton said.

However this event is not about vanity but a fundraiser to raise money to pay back grants to the school and for the first time, award two scholarships.

“I think some people might be intimidated by thinking they have to have some kind of background in doing runways before they sign up,”  said Kari Andrakowicz, co-chair of the senior fashion show. “Nobody is really going to judge you on how to do the walk or not. It’s just to have a good time and celebrate your senior year. The best part of this event is seeing the kids you think are shy that won’t enjoy walking, really step up, have fun and show their true personality.”

This event, formally called “This 15 It”, is for the seniors and put on by their loving mothers. This is a tradition the Mothers Club is proud to uphold and use to give back to the community. In fact, this event has caused such an impact on participating seniors that Andy Sulick, current President of SMCHS who participated in the fashion show of 1991, is going to host the opening ceremonies this May 3, 2015.
