Recently, a growing number of students have been spending their lunch breaks in the classroom of Mr. De Vera and Mr. A. As soon as one enters, they immediately notice baskets full of all kinds of snacks, from chips to candy, neatly organized around the room. It’s become something of a lunchtime hotspot for students looking for a safe space to enjoy snacks and company of their friends.
The whole snack phenomenon began earlier this year when Mr. A brought some leftover snacks from the junior retreat to his room. At first, it was a modest amount, just a few granola bars and chips. But soon, curious students began to trickle in, seeking a quiet spot to do homework or enjoy a snack in peace. Word spread quickly, and what started as a handful of students gradually turned into a much larger lunchtime gathering. “It all started with the usual girls,” said Mr A, “A few seniors and juniors.” Among these early regulars were Lila Lao, Macy Taylor, and Emma Silva, who remember how the room quickly became a place of comfort.
“The snacks are great, and we love the company,” say the girls, who have become familiar faces in the classroom. “Mr. De Vera also gives us some really good advice, too,” they add. This highlights the sense of community that has grown around the snack-filled lunches. What began as a small group of students has now expanded to include up to ten girls per lunch period. And the snack inventory has grown as well. There are now baked goods, and other snacks donated parents.
Whether students are looking for a sweet treat or just some time to unwind, it’s clear that Mr. A and Mr. De Vera’s classroom has become a go-to destination during lunch. Mr. A welcomes students to come enjoy a snack with only one rule, “You have to say stop and say hi before grabbing a snack!”
