Sigma, sigma on the wall, who’s the skibidiest of them all?
If you’re completely confused about what the statement above means, you’re not alone. The uprising trend of “brainrot” has taken the internet by storm. Words such as skibidi, alpha, mew, yap, beta, and sigma can be found on all social media platforms used by influencers, especially the upcoming generation, Gen Alpha, who has basically invented a new language.
So, what does it mean? The word “skibidi” is used as an adjective to describe things. Depending on its use, it can have a positive or negative connotation. For instance, one would say, “What the skibidi?” if they were shocked.
Words such as beta, alpha, and sigma are classifications or rankings that can be applied to people or items. At the top of the food chain is sigma, an accomplishment to be called. Next comes alpha, which relates to the “alpha wolf” trend. Lastly is beta, which is supposed to be at the bottom of the three rankings or used to denote a lesser value.
Mewing is a trend where a person pronounces their jawline and works on making it sharper. When a person is doing this and someone attempts to talk to them, they will put their pointer to their mouth to signify they can’t talk and trace the line of their jaw with the same finger. They do this because they are conveying that they are ‘mewing’.
To yap means to talk a lot. If a person were to talk constantly, they would be labeled as a “yapper”. A creative use of the word, people are citing they want to move to the “yappalachian” mountains because they love talking so much. This term is a play on words with the actual Appalachian Mountains, adding yap at the beginning to produce laughs and explain their passion for talking.
These trends have taken the world by storm on social media platforms, with users scouring videos for their meanings and others laughing at the creative uses of this new generation’s slang. With the world adapting to new generational vocabulary, Gen Z’s trends fade out of relevance and Gen Alpha’s trends become increasingly popular.
