They’ve got spirit yes they do
ASB Spirit Commissioners invest time and talent to energize student body.
“Grill in the Grotto”, “America Day”, hula dancers, shaved ice, class shirts and an unforgettable pep rally. Those are just some of the elements of the first spirit week of the 2014-2015 school year.
With one spirit week already under their belts, this year’s ASB Spirit Commissioners — seniors Noelle Kendall and Ally Carey and junior Mickey Galvin — are on top of their game. Developing new ideas and dress up days for a spirit week requires ample time and dedication.
“We want to make sure that we incorporate a variety of creative ideas in order to make it a successful week for all students,” Carey said.
Wanting to live up to their own high expectations, Carey, Kendall and Galvin gave their all in planning every detail of spirit week.
“At first I was extremely stressed and worried about this process,” Kendall said. “It was only the first week of school and we were already planning for the spirit week that was a month away.”
Carey, Kendall and Galvin wanted to make each spirit day as relatable and collaborative as possible, so that all students felt encouraged to dress up for the festivities.
“We were really ambitious at first when planning, then we realized that making the days simpler would hopefully result in more participation,” Kendall said. “In the end it did and it was awesome.”
ASB President Jack Jennison heard great feedback about the fall spirit week.
“It was unreal and the spirit of everybody made it amazing,” Jennison said. “We plan to continue this spirit into homecoming week, and make it truly unforgettable.”
The fall spirit week set an enthusiastic tone for the year, especially for seniors.
“[It was] amazing,” said senior Kylie Lyall. “It was one of the best spirit weeks out of my all four years of high school. I really love dressing up and participating in each day, it’s so much more fun.”
This triumph meant a lot to the spirit commissioners. They stayed two hours after school every day and kept in constant communication with each other.
While other ASB members contribute to the flow of ideas for each spirit week, the spirit commissioners are the ones who ultimately plan the week’s climax: the rally.
The routine goes like this: First the spirit commissioners write a detailed script that provides the overall plan for the rally. The script needs to have a multitude of engaging aspects that will keep the student body entertained and elated.
The commissioners seek approval for their precious script by the activities director, Sammer Darwazeh. From there they make changes depending on his feedback and adjust the final edition for the actual rally.
Carey, Kendall and Galvin are in the midst of planning future spirit weeks and look forward to what the rest of the year holds.
Kendall advised the student body to participate in the dress up days and keep up with the helpful reminders the student-run ASB Instagram posts.
“When all students dress up, it is a better experience around school and it gives all students a chance to get out of their uniforms for a week,” Carey said.
Kendall said the fall spirit week set a precedence for good things to come for the rest of the year.
“It truly is a good testament to the great spirit SM has,” Kendall said.
