Big news for the little prince
The SMCHS theater introduces its fall play, The Little Prince, along with an exciting new year.
With a new school year comes the fall wave of upcoming events for people to join like football games, dances, clubs and, of course, plays.
The theater department is gearing up for an exciting production and you can be a part of it. If you’re looking for a fun event to attend or even participate in for this fall, the new play, The Little Prince, might just be exactly what you need.
For some of you, this might be a great opportunity to decide whether or not high school theater is for you.
“Some of the things we do include going to festivals, having socials, and exploring the world of theater together,” explained Amy Luskey-Barth, head of the theater department.
Theater is already planning their first production, The Little Prince, a story written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, a French pilot who was inspired to write this book after crashing his plane in the Sahara Desert.
The play will be held in the black box.
“As a director, I thought Little Prince would work well in the black box because it lends itself creatively to students designers for sets, lights, sound and costumes,” Barth said.
If acting on stage isn’t what you want to do, the play has many other opportunities to get involved. Costume design, set design, stage management, lights, sound, tech and props are just a few examples of how to become part of the backstage crew.
“It’s more lenient [to become part of the crew] and you also get to be a part of the family,” said Jeanne Faris, Thespian Club vice president.
The Little Prince is a perfect choice to kick of this year’s theme of “Following your heart.”
“The Little Prince brings something to the table for everyone,” said Andrea Martines, president of the Thespian Club. “Everyone walks away with a special message.”
Along with the deeper emotion and careful planning for The Little Prince come the new feature to the play: a four sided-audience plan. For The Little Prince, the crowd will have a three-sixty audience view of the stage.
The audience plan will create an inclusive atmosphere — a feeling that pervades SMCHS’s theater community.
“Talon Theater is a family, first and foremost,” Barth said. “We spend a lot of time working and playing and exploring the world of theater together.”
Tryouts for The Little Prince will be held on September 2, 2014.
