Two for the price of one

Side by side, BFFs Emma Kearns and Gillian Wallace take on each day one hilarious joke at a time.

Birthday parties. Unplanned adventures. The ups and the downs. Year after year, a best friend is by your side through it all. For sophomore BFFs Emma Kearns and Gillian Wallace, they have turned those situations and more into meaningful memories. With just two years of history to their friendship, they have discovered that their humor apart is nothing compared to what they can accomplish when they are together.

Kearns and Wallace are known as an inseparable pair with an effortless sense of humor that riddles vlogs and Vine. They are known for their daily Snapchat stories that often start out as, “Hey guys, it’s Gillian and Emma here,” followed by a detailed report on where they are and what they’re doing.

The two met at their old dance studio, and their friendship took off when they both made the JV Song team.

“I remember the bench I was sitting on when I first saw a nearly 6-foot white girl that wore too much eyeliner,” Kearns said. “I thought she was very quiet and shy. Oh, how times have changed.”

Even their first impressions of each other are laughable, and quite ironic considering how close they are today. They can say anything to each other or about each other without worry. From the first time they hung out socially, Kearns and Wallace were making memories that they still laugh about today.

“If I were to describe Emma in one word, it would be ‘ginger’ because she has red hair,” Wallace said. “And because the first time we had a sleepover we made gingerbread cookies.”

Kearns added that at their first sleepover, they also “made an extremely embarrassing music video where [they] dressed up as boys and called each other Desmond and Napoleon.”

Random, right? That’s the essence of their friendship. You will end up laughing with them no matter what the circumstances are.

“They are probably two of the funniest people that I ever met,” said sophomore Delaney McCabe. “Whenever I am with them, no matter what, I will laugh.”

The two are very aware of the effect that their humorous friendship has on others.

“We constantly act like fools and all of our other friends do not understand our humor,” Kearns said. “They are all low-key jealous of our friendship.”

In the short lifespan of their friendship, the pair even made a trip to Maui in summer 2014.

“We made a rap song about the vacation and we are in the process of getting it produced,” Kearns joked.

Kearns and Wallace share a random array of hobbies to grow their friendship.

“Our favorite things to do together are to sleep in, get Banzai Bowls, go shopping, bother our Song coaches and make Vines,” Wallace said.

Even the differences in their personalities help Kearns and Wallace make a perfect match.

“Gillian is relatively carefree about things like school and even sometimes hygiene, and this balances us out,” Kearns said. “But I have never met someone so strange and humorous as she is, and that’s what makes us best friends.”

No one quite knows why, but being around these friends just makes you laugh. Maybe it’s the randomness of the adventure, the awkward photos that come from it, or just the fact that they are running around in horse masks listening to Pitbull.

“The summer going into freshman year there was a Song party and the theme was magic,” Wallace said.  “Everyone came as bunnies and wore cute costumes, and Emma and I bought full on wizard costumes and showed up in beards and cloaks.”

With Kearns and Wallace, it’s a “package deal” — they either come together, or not at all. On average, they spend 47 hours together a week and are with each other Friday night to Sunday night.

“They finish each other’s sentences and can literally read each other’s minds,” McCabe said.

Underneath all of the humor and jokes however, these friends cherish their friendship more than anything.

“I cannot imagine my life without Emma, we are definitely soulmate friends,” Wallace said.  “She is a part of everything in my life, and I can talk to her about anything.”

Kearns feels the same way about her loyal companion, as she recognizes how humorless her life would be without her best friend by her side.

“I seriously don’t know where I would be without Gillian,” Kearns said. “I would be a lifeless carcass with no friends.”
