As families return from their spring break getaways and students rush to finish their break homework, two destinations stood out as the most popular choices this year: Hawaii and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
With their warm climates, family-friendly activities, and stunning scenery, these locations drew many SM families looking for a mix of relaxation and adventure.
Hawaii has long been a top-tier vacation destination, and this spring break was no exception. Families flocked to the islands for their diverse landscapes, outdoor activities, and unique cultural experiences.
Oahu, home to the bustling city of Honolulu and famous Waikiki Beach, attracted families looking for a mix of city life and beachside relaxation. Popular excursions included visits to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, hikes up Diamond Head, and snorkeling at Hanauma Bay. Meanwhile, the island’s Polynesian Cultural Center offered an immersive look at Hawaiian and Pacific Islander traditions.
Over on Maui (the most popular location), families enjoyed sunrises at Haleakalā National Park and snorkeling at Molokini Crater. With its laid-back vibe and stunning beaches, Maui provided the perfect escape for those seeking a slower pace.
For more adventurous travelers and those seeking more greenery, Kauai and Big Island offered experiences like hiking the Nā Pali Coast, visiting Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, and exploring lush rainforests and waterfalls.
Beyond its natural beauty, Hawaii’s reputation for safety, eco-friendly tourism, and family-oriented resorts made it a top choice for parents wanting both adventure and peace of mind.
While Hawaii was a popular pick, Cabo San Lucas isn’t too far behind. Located at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula (and only a 2-hour flight away), Cabo’s mix of luxury resorts, beachside relaxation, and adventure-filled excursions made it a prime choice for families, including my own.
One of the biggest draws was the famous El Arco, the stunning rock formation where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. Families enjoyed boat tours, spotting sea lions, and spending time at Sunset Beach. Chileno Bay and Santa Maria Beach were top snorkeling spots, while whale watching tours gave visitors the chance to see humpback and gray whales up close.
For those looking for more excitement, Cabo offered activities like ATV desert tours, jet skiing, zip-lining, and camel rides along the beach.
Cabo’s popularity also stemmed from its all-inclusive resorts, which catered to families with kid-friendly pools, entertainment, and dining options. It also doesn’t hurt that the UV reached up to 11, which is definitely strong enough to get back the much-needed tan lost over the winter.
While some families traditionally opt for using up the last of the snow in Mammoth or just relaxing at home, this year’s spring break showed a strong preference for beach destinations that offered both relaxation and adventure. With many travelers prioritizing outdoor activities and scenic locations, Hawaii and Cabo provided the perfect balance of exploration and downtime. This spring break proved that families are eager to make the most of their time off in paradise.
