A group of sophomores in the SMCHS MUN program recently won the Best Class award for their outstanding performance and awards at the 73rd annual Berkeley Model United Nations (BMUN) conference.
The Best Class award is given to the MUN class or club that performs the best out of all the other schools’ MUN programs participating in the conference. This marked the third time in history that SMCHS won the prestigious award.
SMCHS’s MUN students performed exceptionally well at the conference, winning numerous awards including two students who won the Best Delegate award. This award is the highest honor a delegate can receive, given to the delegate who performs better than everyone else in their committee.
The Berkeley Model United Nations conference is regarded as one of the most competitive conferences in the nation, with students flying in from across the country and the world to attend. SMCHS students who attended BMUN had to first apply and be invited to go on the trip.
The SMCHS BMUN trip spanned a total of four days, flying into Oakland on Thursday morning March 6 and flying back Sunday night March 9.
Thursday consisted of touring around San Francisco after departing from the airport. Students saw major attractions like the Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39, and Ghirardelli Square.
Friday afternoon involved touring UC Berkeley’s campus and free time before heading to the first committee session which ran from 7-10 p.m. Committee sessions continued all throughout Saturday and briefly on Sunday before the awards ceremony.
After leaving the award ceremony with pride, SMCHS delegates got their luggage from the hotel before heading to the airport to fly back with their many awards and historic Best Class award.
