At Santa Margarita, faith is incorporated into every aspect of the school experience from prayer to mass to even our football team. Coach Hendren, a football coach at SM shared that he coaches the team, “Integrating God into our program even more so carrying themselves[players] in ways that reflect Catholic school teachings”.
Coach Hendren had played football all throughout his life including during his time at Boston College. “Faith keeps me motivated” said Hendren. The culture of the team is super important to him. Especially having the culture focus on love for Jesus and each other. It isn’t just about playing the game- it’s about shaping young men and preparing them to carry their faith and values into the world both on and off the field.
He explains that the core values of football are closely aligned with the Catholic faith. “There’s a lot of life lessons in football. It’s unique among other team sports” said Hendren. “It takes everyone’s collective effort for success.”
Team Prayer has been a ritual before and after every practice and game. This is a time for players to ask God for guidance and strength in solidarity. This is a key in establishing a tight-knit community within the team.
In the end, the football program at Santa Margarita is more than just about winning games. It’s about fostering a culture of faith, unity, and personal growth. Coach Hendren’s commitment to integrating Catholic values into the team not only prepares players for success on the field, but also equips them for what they need to thrive in life.
